The imposter drawing game: draw, then unmask

Every player gets a secret word — except one, who gets something close to it. You take turns adding to the same sketch without speaking, then vote on who does not belong. A free drawing game for 3 or more players, no pens or paper needed.

How to play the imposter drawing game

1. Gather at least three players — One phone is enough for the whole group. Enter everyone’s name and the game assigns the secret roles for you.
2. See your word in private — Pass the phone around. Each player looks at their word alone, then hides the screen before handing it on. One player gets a different but similar word — that is the imposter, and they do not know it.
3. Take turns drawing — On one shared sketch, each player adds a single stroke or element per turn, without speaking. The imposter has to improvise from whatever appears on screen.
4. Vote and reveal — After the final turn, everyone points at who they suspect. The game then reveals both words and who the imposter really was.

Strategy tips

• Do not draw too well on the first turn — a precise stroke instantly marks you as someone who knows the word.
• As the imposter, wait until the second turn before adding anything meaningful.
• A player who stays vague two turns running looks guilty — but that is also exactly what a cautious innocent does.
• Three players works; from five upward the imposter has a genuinely hard time blending in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum number of players?

Three is enough, but the game really comes alive at four or five, when it gets much harder for the imposter to disappear into the group.

Does every player need their own phone?

No. It is built around a single device being passed around, and that hand-to-hand pass is what makes the word reveal tense in the first place.

Do I need to be good at drawing?

Not remotely — it is better if nobody is. The game is about deduction, not draughtsmanship. Stick figures do the job perfectly.

What if the imposter works out the real word?

Then they can draw like everyone else and slip through unnoticed. It is the best outcome available to them, and it happens more often than you would expect with closely paired words.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The words are everyday objects and situations with no sensitive content, and the rules take about a minute to explain.
